It is nearly the end of the year and I have been using PEEL all year. I think the goal of pushing critical thinking and problem solving skills has been a tough sell. It has been tough because my students have been conditioned to only work for a sage on the stage. The focus of PEEL is not sage on the stage but rather guide on the side. I had to shift how I taught in order to be successful and I think I have done pretty well in my shift. The challenge is getting the students to see that they know more than they think they do.
I have really enjoyed the way my PEEL classroom is working although it is hard sometimes to see how valuable it really is. Maybe they get it more than they used to, maybe not. I guess time will tell, or maybe I will have them tell me using exit slips... (another PEEL process)
